Welcome To Horse Trainer Directory

Bryan Smart has built an enviable reputation as a top class trainer.

Having trained very successfully in Lambourn for 12 years Bryan, Vicky and daughter Beth relocated to the historic Hambleton House in North Yorkshire in October 2002. Bryan and his team have worked very hard to bring this historic racing yard back to its former glory and have trained many winners including a number of 'Group races' including a Group 1 win for Tangerine Trees at Longchamp and Group 2 wins with Monsieur Bond at York, Hellvelyn at Royal Ascot and Moviesta in the King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Hambleton House and the surrounding area is steeped in racing history. Once the site of Hambleton Racecourse, the Hambleton Hills have been famous for hundreds of years as the best ground for training horses and trainers from all over the North of England would travel their horses to Hambleton to gallop their horses on the old turf during the summer months when the ground was hard everywhere else. Records dating back to the 17th Century show that many good horses were trained out of Hambleton House and many tales can be told by the locals about the fantastic wagers that were bet on horses trained here.

More recently Noel Murless trained a Derby winner and the famous trainer's ashes are scattered on the gallops. Jack Calvert also trained for many years prior to its modernization and since they moved in Bryan and Vicky have continued to improve this historic yard and gallops.

The facilities at Hambleton House include over 100 stables, 2 horse walkers, an indoor school, a 1 furlong all weather trot/canter track, all-weather and grass gallops and a cold water Jacuzzi Spa. Hambleton House is the highest altitude training yard in the country at over 1300 ft above sea level. Situated at the top of infamous Sutton Bank and the Whitestone Cliff, there are far reaching views across the Vale of York to the South and the North Yorkshire moors to the North. It is heaven on earth for any horse and has a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere which soon rubs off on any visitor who is usually keen to take photographs with which to remember their visit.

Hambleton House is tucked away down a quiet lane off the main A170 Scarborough road and is proud to have its own grass and all weather gallops which includes a 5 furlong straight and an 8-furlong circular canter. Hambleton House really is everything a racehorse trainer could dream of and is perfect for any horse that might need an individual training programme as the land is close to miles of woods, moorland and bridleways without the need to see a main road. There are numerous turn out paddocks and pens for the horses to relax in during the summer months.
