Welcome To Horse Trainer Directory

At the end of another season of solid achievement Marcus Tregoning is looking forward to 2016 with his biggest team of horses since he moved to historic Whitsbury early in 2013.
Exciting challenges lay ahead with upwards of twenty two-year-olds for 2016 including several owned by enthusiastic new clients who have join the elite group of Tregoning Owners.

Tregoning will also be looking to add to his team at the breeze-up sales in the spring.
With a number of new yearlings and a well-balanced group of older horses led by the stable star Bronze Angel, dual winner of the Cambridgeshire, the trainer expects to begin the New Year with around sixty horses in his care.

Tregoning was in typically upbeat mood as he discussed his plans for the future.
“I can’t wait for the new season to come. Whitsbury is a wonderful place to train and I was always looking to expand the numbers once I got to know all the facilities.

“We are able to use a variety of grass and all-weather gallops in a beautiful setting, so we are certainly not short of options for the horses.

“In my time at Lambourn, I trained 43 Group race winners yet in a strange way once we moved here it was a bit like starting again from nothing. Although we were badly down on numbers that first season I enjoyed the challenge.

“We’ve made good progress in each of the last three years and are now ready to take another step forward.”

Tregoning is best known as the trainer of Sir Percy, a brilliant two-year-old who was then second in the 2,000 Guineas in 2006 before winning the Derby.

There is no disguising his delight that several of his winners in 2015 were by Sir Percy who has passed on his stamina and courage to his offspring in equal measure.

He concedes “Hopefully I will be training winners by Sir Percy for years to come”.
With Bronze Angel as a trusted flag bearer and a number of younger stable mates such as Burmese and Alamode showing promise for the future, we can expect Tregoning to take another significant step forward next season.

Marcus’s impressive CV includes a Derby winner Sir Percy (2006), who defied current convention that owners need to fork out untold fortunes to find success at the highest level.
Marcus paid only 16,000 guineas at the sales for Sir Percy, who proved to be a brilliantly talented two-year-old and then finished second in the 2,000 Guineas before gaining a famous triumph at Epsom with a daring run late on the inside rail.

The knowledge Marcus gained from years as an assistant to the training legend Dick Hern was immediately evident when he took out his own licence in 1997.

In the seasons that followed, he delivered a conveyor belt of winners. Nayef, four times a Group 1 winner, Askar Tau, Ekraar and the wonderfully reliable Mubtaker all played their part in campaigning with success at the highest level.

The trainer recalls “At the peak of his powers Mubtaker was the world’s highest-rated horse. He kept winning year after year and was such a favourite in the yard.”

Late in 2012 Marcus announced that he would be moving to Whitsbury Manor Stables near Fordingbridge. It followed an approach by Whitsbury’s owner Chris Harper.

Marcus explains “The move made sense for a number of reasons at a time when we were thinking of downsizing. We had a rewarding time at Kingwood but once it became clear the place was being put on the market I had to consider other options.

“When Chris contacted me things fell quickly into place as Whitsbury has always been a place I admired.

“David Elsworth enjoyed outstanding success here, most notably with the legendary grey chaser Desert Orchid.

“He trained winners on the flat at all distances from five furlongs to two miles though my favourite was his brilliantly gifted filly In The Groove.

“We are able to use an excellent variety of grass and all-weather gallops in a beautiful setting, so we are certainly not short of options for the horses.

“Whitsbury has a rich tradition of producing winners. Hopefully, I can carry that on.”
