Every trainer strives to make his mark, training ever more and better winners for owners. It takes teamwork, dedication and support - Clive Cox has all three, and since 1999 he has established himself as one of England's leading racehorse trainers. Typically producing shrewdly bought horses to win big races, Clive is equally at home training precocious Group 1 winning two year olds as he is at planning and landing big handicap wins.
Since moving to Beechdown in 2000, Clive has built a reputation for his success in big handicaps with his own well-bought purchases and since Beacon Lodge gave him his first Group race winner, in 2007, his standing as a trainer has been enhanced with further black-type success.
In this era of international racing, Clive's quest for success is worldwide, with runners in Ireland, France, Germany and Canada as well as the United Kingdom.
Clive's owners and their horses always receive a first class service at Beechdown. All visitors to Beechdown are made most welcome and if you are interested in any aspect of racehorse ownership please get in touch; we look forward to hearing from you.
2012 was a great season, with the Group 1 successes for France's leading two year old Reckless Abandon topping a great year.
2011 yielded 52 winners, including listed race and Group class winners.
The 2010 season provided Clive with his greatest achievement to date, Group 1 success, when Gilt Edge Girl ridden by Luke Morris, stormed to victory at Longchamp, to win one of Europe's Sprint Championships, the Prix de l'Abbaye, in great style.
Other notable Pattern Race winners during the 2010 season were Balthazaar's Gift (Group 2) & Poet (Group 3), along with further Group 3 and Listed successes for Gilt Edge Girl as well as victories in Listed Races for the constistent top flight performers Polly's Mark and Dunelight.
About Clive Cox From a farming background in Somerset, Clive had a successful career as a NH Jockey and rode nearly 100 winners.
He was Assistant Trainer to Mikey Heaton Ellis and took over the licence at Barbury Castle when Mikey died in 1999.
In May 2000 Clive, Tina and their daughters Lucy and Emily moved to John Francome’s picturesque Beechdown Stables yard on the edge of Lambourn Downs.
Successes on the track soon followed and the number of winners per season have increased every year. Individual attention for every horse is the main ingredient under Clive's expert care: Reckless Abandon's two Goup One successes in 2012 provided Clive with his best season to date. Since Beacon Lodge provided him with his first Group winner in 2007 and Gilt Edge Girl his first Group One winner in 2010 a string of pattern race winners have followed and helped Clive achieve success at the very highest level.
