Welcome To Horse Trainer Directory

David Lanigan is passionate about training racehorses – it’s a love that is in the blood, having been brought up on his parents' farm, Bob and Deirdre Lanigan's Tullamaine Castle Stud, a very successful and renowned breeding business.

His passion, combined with a knowledge gained from being around the best in the racing industry, has made him a trainer to be reckoned with in his own right. Indeed, since taking out a licence at the end of 2007, David’s career has gone from strength to strength with last year – his first based at Kingsdown Stables – being his best to date.

He has a patient and studious style of training. There is a method there, but also an instinctive touch that has delivered some excellent results. Intelligence and intuition – it’s a powerful blend that looks sure to keep pushing the Lanigan name yet further up the table.

There have already been flagship horses that have taken him to many of racing’s biggest meetings. Meeznah, a very classy filly, made her own mark in Group races, winning the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster and a Group 3 at Glorious Goodwood. Then, there has been Main Sequence: in 2012 he only found Camelot too good in Flat racing’s biggest race, the Derby. Both horses have shown how adept David is at successfully managing really good ones. It’s a skill that takes some mastering.

But then he has had every chance to learn his craft. From as young as he can recall, everyday common sense around horses became second nature to him at Tullamaine Castle Stud.

School holidays were spent riding out for Vincent O'Brien at Ballydoyle, John Oxx and also Edward O'Grady. David broadened his horizons with an informative five years in America at J.T.L Jones' Walmac International in, Kentucky where he progressed from yearling sales preparation to working in the breeding shed, handling stallions such as Alleged, Nureyev and Miswaki. He then managed the breaking and training of Walmac's yearling and two-year-old division.

Such experiences have proved invaluable – as was the near-five years that he spent as assistant trainer to Sir Henry Cecil. What a finishing school Warren Place must have been for a dedicated and ambitious horsemen such as David. His time there climaxed with a thrilling victory for Cecil’s charge Light Shift in the 2007 Oaks.

David has developed a superb environment for successful and enjoyable racehorse ownership. Everything points to many more good days in the future – what an opportunity racing from Rathmoy Stables offers for both committed owners as well as newcomers.
